چکیده

In mobile computing scenario, the number of handoff (called as handoff counting) is very important for the signalling network design and traffic load analysis. In this paper, we study the handoff counting characteristics in terms of probability mass function (pmf) and statistical moments in the hierarchical cellular system applying overflow scheme under the general cell residence time and general call holding time distribution. The analytical result and the algorithm for the evaluation of handoff counting are, respectively, presented for the cases whether or not the Laplace–Stieltjes Transform of call holding time exists. The numerical results reveal that as the call holding time is heavy-tailed, the handoff counting follows the heavy-tailed tendency. In addition, the handoff counting pmf as well as the average value shows a significant different pattern with the utilization of different call holding time distribution. 2004 Elsevier B.V. A combined channel assignment mechanism for hierarchical cellular systems

This paper proposes a combined channel assignment (CCA) mechanism for hierarchical cellular systems with overlaying macrocells and overlaid microcells. The proposed CCA mechanism combines overflow, underflow, and reversible schemes, where new or handoff calls having no available channel to use in the overlaid microcell can overflow to use free channels in the overlaying macrocell, handoff calls...

Handoff analysis of the hierarchical cellular system

As mobile telephone traffic demands increase in the future, interest in cellular systems with a hierarchical structure will grow. Hierarchical cellular system can provide high system capacity, efficient channel utilization, and an inherent load-balancing capability. In this type of system, calls blocked in a microcell flow over to a macrocell which is superimposed on a number of microcells. Whe...

Adaptive call admission control and resource allocation in multi server wireless/cellular network

The ever increasing demand of the subscribers has put pressure on the capacity of wireless networks around the world. To utilize the scare resources, in the present paper we propose an optimal allocation scheme for an integrated wireless/cellular model with handoff priority and handoff guarantee services. The suggested algorithm optimally allocates the resources in each cell and dynamically adj...

Mobile Velocity Based Bidirectional Call Overflow Scheme in Hierarchical Cellular System

In the age of global communications, heterogeneous networks are seen to be the best choice of strategy to ensure continuous and uninterruptible services. This will allow mobile terminal to stay in connection even they are migrating into different segment coverage through the handoff process. With the increase of teletraffic demands in mobile cellular system, hierarchical cellular systems have b...

Performance Evaluation of Hierarchical Multiservice CDMA Networks for Intelligent Transportation Systems

In this paper we propose a hierarchical cellular CDMA network for ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) supporting both voice and video calls. It is assumed that voice calls have shorter average call holding time, whereas video calls have longer average call holding time. The video calls are assigned to the associated macrocell in order to reduce the number of handoffs and the voice calls are...
